Tips for teachers: 52. The benefits of low stakes recall

Oct 8, 2025 | Blogs

‘Retrieval practice is the strategy of recalling facts, concepts, or events from memory in order to enhance learning. The act of retrieving something from your memory actually strengthensthe connections holding it there, making it more likely that you’ll be able to recall it in the future. A classic example of retrieval practice is using flashcards as a study tool. Sometimes called the “testing effect,” retrieval practice in teaching is not limited to quizzes or exams, but can include any exercise where students attempt to retrieve what they have learned from their memory.’ (https://ctl.wustl.edu/resources/using-retrieval-practice-to-increase-student-learning/)

Low-stakes recall, also known as retrieval practice or low-stakes testing, offers numerous benefits in the classroom, including improved long-term retention, increased student awareness of knowledge gaps, and enhanced classroom engagement. By requiring students to retrieve information from memory, low-stakes recall strengthens memory connections, making information more likely to be remembered over time.

Benefits of low-stakes recall:

• Improved Long-Term Retention: The act of retrieving information from memory strengthens the connections holding it there, making it more likely to be recalled later. Studies have shown that testing students, even under low-stakes conditions, can significantly enhance their ability to recall information compared to simply rereading material.
• Enhanced Memory Consolidation: Retrieval practice helps consolidate memories, making them more secure and less likely to be forgotten.
• Identifying Gaps in Understanding: Low-stakes activities provide opportunities to identify areas where students are struggling with specific concepts or skills, allowing teachers to provide targeted feedback and support. Low-stakes recall can also allow students to assess their own understanding of a topic. By actively trying to retrieve information, students can identify areas where they need more practice or clarification.
• Increased Motivation and Engagement: When students are regularly challenged to recall information, they are more likely to become engaged and motivated to learn. Frequent, low-stakes recall activities can help students stay actively engaged with the material and prevent them from drifting into passive learning.
• Reduced Stress: Low-stakes recall can help students build confidence in their ability to recall information, reducing the stress associated with high-stakes testing.
• Reduced Forgetting: Regular retrieval practice can interrupt the natural process of forgetting, helping students retain information for longer periods of time.
• Improved Study Habits: Low-stakes activities can encourage students to study more effectively by providing them with regular opportunities to test their knowledge.
• Teacher Feedback and Adaptation: Low-stakes recall allows teachers to quickly gauge student understanding and adapt their instruction accordingly, ensuring that all students have an opportunity to succeed.
