Tips for leaders: 29. Ethical leadership

Sep 15, 2025 | Blogs

‘Ethical leadership should be at the heart of everything we do. Staff and students will only experience support and care if school leaders are ethically motivated and well-prepared for their roles.’ (Code of ethical practice in leadership, NEU)

Ethical leadership in schools involves leaders modelling integrity, fairness, and justice, fostering a culture of respect and accountability where all members are treated with dignity and their contributions are valued.

Key Principles of Ethical Leadership in Schools:

• Integrity: Leaders must act with honesty and transparency, avoiding conflicts of interest and upholding ethical standards in all their actions.
• Fairness and Justice: Decisions should be made impartially, considering the needs and perspectives of all stakeholders, including students, staff, and the wider community.
• Respect and Dignity: Leaders must create a culture where everyone feels valued, respected, and safe, regardless of background or circumstances.
• Accountability: Leaders are responsible for their actions and decisions, and they must hold others accountable for upholding ethical standards.
• Collaboration and Inclusion: Ethical leaders foster a collaborative environment where diverse voices are heard and valued, and where everyone has the opportunity tocontribute.
• Vision and Purpose: Ethical leaders have a clear vision for the school and a strong sense of purpose that guides their actions and decisions.
• Courage and Resilience: Ethical leaders stand up for what is right, even in the face of adversity, and they are resilient in the face of challenges.
• Service: Ethical leaders are dedicated to serving the best interests of students and the school community.
• Wisdom: Ethical leaders use experience, knowledge, and insight to make sound judgments and decisions.
• Kindness: Ethical leaders demonstrate respect, generosity of spirit, understanding, and good temper.

Benefits of Ethical Leadership:

• Improved School Culture: Ethical leadership fosters a positive and supportive school culture where everyone feels valued and respected.
• Enhanced Student Outcomes: When students see their leaders acting ethically, they are more likely to develop their own ethical values and behaviours.
• Increased Staff Morale and Retention: Ethical leadership creates a more positive and supportive work environment for staff, which can lead to increased morale and retention.
• Stronger Community Relationships: Ethical leadership builds trust and positive relationships with parents, community members, and other stakeholders.
• Greater Accountability: Ethical leaders are accountable for their actions and decisions, which can lead to greater transparency and trust.

‘We all have a duty to behave ethically, but the bar for school leaders and governing boards is particularly high because they are setting the standards for the young people in their care and in turn the sort of society that we become in the future.’ (Ethical leadership in education, NGA)
