Tips for leaders: 19. Teacher collaboration

Nov 25, 2024 | Blogs

‘Teacher collaboration in education involves teachers working together to lead, instruct, and mentor students with the goal of improving student learning and achievement…Teachers can help their colleagues grow by sharing their expertise. It builds confidence for the one sharing his or her knowledge on specific expertise while helping the recipient learn from a different perspective.’ (Imed Bouchrika, 2024)

Teacher collaboration is a useful professional tool which can develop teaching skills, knowledge and processes and subject knowledge.

How can we collaborate with other teachers?

  • Identify the teachers in your school who already demonstrate the behaviours / expertise / knowledge or skill set required.
  • Ensure enough time is available for teachers to meet, observe, coach or mentor.
  • Identify the areas of development needed in the school, the causes and what success might look like.
  • Join professional learning communities, grassroot organisations and networks.
  • Develop a programme of structured peer observations.
  • Create a supportive environment which actively encourages teachers to learn from each other to improve practice.
  • Use technology to facilitate collaboration.
  • Facilitate support and challenge to ensure effectiveness of collaboration.
  • Create a cycle of reflection, discussion and follow-up.
  • Have an open-door policy / leave classroom doors open to foster transparency.
  • Work in teacher pairs / triads or create collaboration teams.
  • Create a set of agreed protocols.
  • Leaders model collaboration by being open to feedback.

Why should we collaborate with other teachers?

  • To build social bonds with other teachers.
  • It creates a shared sense of purpose.
  • Helps solve problems and challenges.
  • Enables engagement and improve motivation.
  • Refines approaches to teaching and practice.
  • Develops expertise, skills and knowledge.
  • Promotes positive school environments.

  • Provides emotional support.
  • Generates ideas.
  • Encourages self-reflection.

  • Establishes shared values.
  • Develops conflict management.
  • Builds collective teacher efficacy.
